On June 23rd Andy and I will participate in the Subaru Ironman 70.3 Mont-Tremblant as members of Team Heart, in support of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation.
Working at the Heart Institute, I feel very proud to be able to see first-hand the amazing, world-class work that is accomplished there. In my division, Prevention and Rehabilitation, it is very rewarding to see the power that exercise has in helping people recover. By taking on this extra challenge of physical activity, we are hoping we can help make a difference in the life of the people with heart conditions.
One of the other major accomplishments for our Division has been the development of the Canadian Women's Heart Health Centre, whose aim is to bring better awareness and care to women's heart health.
Women are under-diagnosed, under-treated and under-studied when it comes to cardiovascular disease. As a result, heart disease is the number one killer of Canadian women, accounting for more deaths each year than all cancers combined. It doesn't have to be this way. The Canadian Women's Heart Health Centre is dedicated to helping to close the gaps and ensure women are as well-informed and well-cared for as men. Funds raised through this initiative will help build programs that will improve care, raise awareness of heart disease, especially in women; and deepen knowledge through research targeted to women.
I am also proud to be doing this event with Andy, who has chosen to join Team Heart to help support this amazing Institution and all the good work it does. I hope you can join us in donating to Team Heart so that you too can help make a difference for heart patients now and well into the future.
Thank you for your support and making a difference!
