On April 26th and 27th, Scott Johnson and I will we hosting the first annual 24 Hours of Golf presented by Sutton Ottawa, in support of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation. Here's why...
On April 4, 2007, just 4 days after spending a week playing golf with my dad in Florida, we got the terrible news that he had a massive heart attack and passed away. He was just 60 years old. He was a patient at the Heart Institute years earlier where he received two stents to open up partially blocked arteries. A third remained 100% blocked. Scott received the same shocking news only a few years later that his dad had also passed away suddenly at the age of 65.
Over the last few years, during Heart Month, Scott and I have teamed up to raise money for the Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation and while we will continue to do so, he presented a bigger fundraising idea to me last spring. Through our partnership with the Heart Institue Foundation and our great sponsors including Sutton Ottawa, Accenture, Golf-O-Max and Sala San Marco (see the full list at www.24hoursofgolf.ca), we have a very exciting event ahead of us. I've decided to golf the entire 24 hours so your support is greatly appreciated. I'm setting a lofty goal that I'm determined to reach.
The Ottawa Heart Institute's new clinical tower – the largest expansion in the Heart Institute’s more than 40 year history - opened its doors in April 2018. The next exciting step in this journey will be the renovations to several floors of the original building on Ruskin Street. With the addition of escalators and a central registration desk, the experience for patients and their families will be significantly enhanced with better access and navigation tools.
These additions and renovations will ensure our continued capacity to shape cardiovascular care, research and education well into the future. Healthcare institutions like the Heart Institute do not receive funding from any level of government for the purchase of critical and highly specialized equipment. Funds raised through this event will support equipment purchases as well as programs, research, education, and patient care at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Your generous support for my challenge in support of the Heart Institute, will help an exceptional team of health care professionals advance cardiovascular care and ensure they can keep saving lives in our community.
I hope you can join me to help us ensure that the Heart Institute Foundation provides the best care possible for all patients well into the future.
Thank you for your support and making a difference!
