Run For Roon

“Life is Good", as Roon would always say...

Michael was a patient at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute for more than 15 years.

Throughout the years, Michael always received the best of care, not only from Dr. Chan and Dr. Green but from the whole team, especially the kind and extremely capable nurses. He compared the Ottawa Heart Institute with the treatment he had received since birth from hospitals such as Massachusetts General, the Mayo Clinic, Toronto Sick Kids, and Texas Children's Hospital, and he always said that the Heart Institute was just as top-notch.

Michael passed away suddenly on November 21, 2011 at the age of 52. The idea of establishing the Michael Rooney and Family Endowment Fund came from my sister, Ann, when we learned that so many had contributed to the Ottawa Heart Institute in Michael's memory. The Endowment Fund is a "forever" gift in honour of Michael, who will be "forever" in our hearts. The Michael Rooney and Family Endowment Fund is also a legacy for our three children: David, Sarah and Johnathan.

In 2012, we started the Run For Roon, as part of the Ottawa Race Weekend (www.runottawa.ca), in support of the Michael Rooney & Family Endowment Fund.

For the past five years, the Run For Roon Team has run the 2km, 5km, 10km, 1/2 marathon or marathon and each year our Team has grown not only in terms of runners but amazing supporters too.

As a result, the Endowment Fund currently stands at an incredible $62,506! Each year, a portion of the Fund supports priorities of the Ottawa Heart Institute. For example, in 2016, allocation from the fund were used to support the Heart Institute's most urgent priorities in the area of research: atrial fibrilation; heart failure; and, personalized innovative peri/operative care and long-term outcomes. In 2015, funds were allocated to support the "My Ottawa Heart Project" - a patient portal to provide patient only access to their own medical records as well as other educational material. I know that Michael would be so proud of us all and pleased to see how we have continued to support the Heart Institute in such meaningful ways.

We also have a lot of fun as you can see from some of the photos below.

While we won't have a formal Team at Ottawa Race Weekend in 2017, the Run For Roon continues, as we all recognize the importance of the Ottawa Heart Institute and the amazing work they do.

On behalf of myself, my kids, and the Ottawa Heart Institute, we thank you for your love and ongoing support to the Run For Roon. LIFE IS GOOD!
